The Canby Farm Garden and Pet Store
sells a variety of garden, nursery, farm, yard, animal and
pet supplies, feeds and seeds. Kirk and Deborah Wade
purchased the business in 1983 from longtime owner, Bill
Stevens. Bill had bought the store in 1959 from John
Todd, who established it five years earlier. The
original store was housed in an old feedmill warehouse at
the corner of Grant Street and 99E. It was relocated
to its present site in 1978.
The Wades began remodeling the
store's retail and warehouse areas when the Canby Market
Center was developed, expanding their farm and garden
supplies and adding a greenhouse during 14 months of work.
Most of the store overhaul was completed by November 2000.
Seasonally, the store employs
between 12 and 16 people, many of whom are longtime and
loyal staff members. Canby Farm Garden & Pet was one
of three local businesses to receive annual Beautification
Awards from the Canby Area Chamber of Commerce at its Jan.
19, 2002 gala.

Just a few weeks after winning the
beautification award for its store expansion and visual
enhancements, Canby Farm, Garden & Pet was severely damaged
by an accidental fire on Friday, Feb. 2, 2002. In all,
up to 75 firefighters and 14 fire engines from eight fire
districts, including Aurora, Molalla, Clackamas County Fire
District No. 1, Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue and Hubbard
with Canby's Fire Department responded to the four-alarm
fire.
The fire is believed to have started
when a heater positioned to warm an iguana fell into the
wood chips in the reptile's enclosure near the sotre's
entrance, or a heat rock for the iguana or a nearby light
fixture may have malfunctioned, investigators found.
None of the firefighters suffered
injuries or smoke inhalation during the six-hour ordeal.
